  Found Dogs

Note to all who have found a dog:
Please do not assume that the owner of the dog you found has been negligent. Responsible dog owners lose dogs all the time. It happens to the best of us - take a look through the site. Just because a dog is lost does not mean that the owner does not care about, or has abused the dog in any way. Please keep this in mind.

When you think you have found the owner:
Request proof of ownership, including photos of the animal, vet records, and licensing papers. This is especially important if you have found a Pit Bull.

Steps to take immediately when you find a dog:
  1. Give the dog some water - you don't know how long they have been "on the road".

  2. Search the Dog Detective database

  3. Register the dog with Dog Detective (it's free and we never spam)
  4. Walk the neighborhood, talk to everybody you run across, and leave your phone number.
  5. PUT UP POSTERS Print Poster Now - Post flyers and posters within a minimum of a 3-mile radius of where your dog was last seen. 32% of lost dogs are found over ten miles from home.
  6. Call your local Animal Control, humane societies, vets and animal shelters to report the dog - Get a Map of all shelters and vets in your area
  7. Take the dog to a local veterinarian to be scanned for a microchip (Vets do not charge for this!)
  8. Contact your neighborhood association
  9. Place an ad in your local newspaper. Check the newspaper lost ads everyday
*In some cities it is not legal to post or hang signs on trees, Department of Water and/or Power poles. In Los Angeles county, CA you can be fined - please check with your city government.

Can't keep the dog you found?
Please don't take the dog to a kill shelter - there are other options!

  • Go here http://www.yahoo.com and search for rescue organizations in your state.
  • Find an organization that will search for the dog's owner BEFORE putting the dog up for adoption or down.
  • Board the dog with a veterinarian until you can find the owner.
  • Have tried everything and still can't find the owner? Keep the dog! You need a dog don't ya think?
